This is the best Health Insurance company I've ever worked with.  Being a 20-something, I pretty much go blind when faced with paperwork and insurance details.

Oscar simplifies everything for me, and gives me a plan option that's practical and affordable.  Whenever I have questions, their customer service rep gets back SO quickly.  It's a huge difference from my last provider Aetna, whom would put me on hold forever before I even get to talk to a real person.

Keep up the great service Oscar!

I just had a generic prescription denied, lady on the phone didn't seem very inclined to assist. They want me to take tests over and try again through an in-network doctor? I paid for him out of pocket!

Feels bad man. I understand risk management, but these yelp reviews... I told so many people about Oscar. I believed in it! They came to our co-working space and pitched it and I really fell for the design. Gotta eat a told-you-so sandwich from my parents and call the exchange. Switching plans is going to be brutal. I can feel it in my bones.

I'm still paying off thousands of dollars in hospital bills that Oscar said were covered in my plan, when in fact they lied about to me and the hospital in question.

What they are doing is outright fraud. Dropped Oscar immediately. The bills still hurt, a lot. AVOID.

Having moved to NYC over a year ago, it was a challenging task to find new doctors. I had a hard time finding doctors I liked through previous Health Care plans. I was surprised to find that I couldn't trust reviews from sites like Zoc Doc and Health Grades. I was frustrated and and pessimistic on finding great doctors that were covered under my insurance.

Oscar Health has been a completely different and positive experience. Aside from the staff being personal and always willing to help, their search tools have given me the best doctor experiences I've had since moving to NYC. The search tool is user friendly and provides a wide array of doctors covered by Oscar.  It  provides numerous filters based on your age, condition, the doctor's distance from home, experience, languages spoken, etc. It is by far one of the most comprehensive I've seen.

After months and months of searching, I easily found an amazing doctor through Oscar. I definitely recommend looking into this as an alternative and much less frustrating health care experience. THANK YOU OSCAR!!

Would NOT COVER MY ASTHMA MEDICATION FLOVENT that I need daily to LIVE!!
I'm allergic to the other inhaled steroids and my Pulmonologist specifically contacted them to get it approved and they still DENIED it !!!!

Now it costs me $200.00 out of my pocket every month !!!!
That's an EXTRA $2,400.00 a year in costs for me.
    Really unacceptable :-((

    So disappointed with OSCAR.
I wanted to believe in their positive advertising hype.
    Changing insurance coverage ASAP.

I feel compelled to write this review as people get ready to shop for their health insurance again through the marketplace. My husband and I really wanted to go with OSCAR because we love the concept behind it and the nice interface, as well as the seeming transparency on everything.
That said, while Oscar is good for healthy, young, single people, I would not recommend it to anyone planning to start a family.

Prenatal/postnatal care coverage was a serious consideration for us when shopping for a new health insurance, because we were planning on having a child and so we specifically looked out for that to make our choice.

Oscar promised to cover all prenatal care BEFORE deductibles but has completely failed us. Sonograms (a basic of prenatal care) and lab tests required by your midwife do not fall under prenatal care and are applied towards your deductible instead.

Apparently, it did not occur to anyone there to define what constitutes prenatal care until I brought it up when i realized my bills were not being covered. It took weeks of exchanges with them for someone to get back to me on that, saying they had just clarified the term. The only prenatal care they actually cover are the check-up visits with your doctor/midwife and a very limited number of blood tests.

As a result we are now having to pay thousands of dollars out-of- pocket for fees we had not anticipated as we assumed they would logically be covered -before deductible- as seemed pretty clear in our plan when we signed up for it.

11/5/2014 Hi Valentina, we're really sorry to hear you feel this way! I understand you've spoken with MJ, Justin, Kara and Kris about this matter and apologize if there's still some misunderstanding.

To clarify, prenatal care covered in full by Oscar is limited to the cost of your visit with your physician and/or nurse midwife as well as select preventive screenings. While prenatal visits are free, prescribed tests and imaging (like sonograms or ultrasounds) are subject to your plan's cost-sharing structure (deductibles, copays and/or coinsurance values). Our prenatal care coverage is in line with ACA recommended guidelines.

Some services we offer our moms-to-be and new moms include (but are not limited to):

    * Prenatal Classes:  Select classes are offered free-of-charge to Oscar members through Stork and Cradle.

    * Lactation Consultation:  Oscar covers a consultation with a lactation specialist through Stork and Cradle free-of-charge.

    * Breast Pumps: Hospital grade breast pump rentals are covered in full (physician prescription required). Oscar will cover the full purchase price for a select list of manual and basic electric breast pumps through our vendor, Better Living Now.

Again, we apologize for any confusion. Kara is looking into this to see how else we can help. She'll be reaching out to you tomorrow to discuss further.

I would definitely caution against signing up with this insurance plan.  The rates seem affordable - but it turns out that a lot of things that appear to be covered on their 'easy to use' website are actually hundreds of dollars!  Their 'affordable' plan anything but , and they actually list false coverage information on their plan pages to draw people in.  I am now stuck with a plan that sucks!  Even my boyfriend's MetroPlus plan beats this!

Oscar has let me down. Beware. I was just denied a prescription I have been using for years. I suffer from migraines....pretty infrequently, maybe 3 or 4 a YEAR, so I don't even use very many pills to fight them.  Through my dad, who is a physician with a pretty big practice in Florida, have tried just about every migraine medication. We finally found one, Relpax, that works perfectly. While i don't take them often, just having them available makes me feel better about the prospects of getting a migraine...and avoiding it. My dad usually prescribes it and just gives me a few samples from his office...thus saving my insurance company $$$. Well I ran out and Oscar claims I have to go and try ALL the other meds all over again and denied covering my prescription. Feels pretty great that I try NOT to use my insurance and use samples and thus save THEM money, then when I need the favor returned, no dice. I was told on the phone that I could appeal but the appeal Rx phone number only accepts calls from doctors. My local doctor said they won't even begin to listen until there is a record of my trying all those other meds. Now I have to bother my overworked dad to go through years of records of our trying all those out, or start from scratch with other meds I've already tried and KNOW make me feel worse than the migrane...FUN!  It makes no sense and I'm dreading getting a migraine now with no meds to fight it. Thanks OSCAR. Simple and sleek is fun and great but when you can't get Rx coverage you really need AND your doctor says you need, what good is it?  I really was liking you, now THIS will be the story I tell people.

    Oscar is excellent!

I have had a very positive experience with Oscar insurance and their customer service. I was able to find an available specialist quickly through the website's online doctor search tool. Justin, the impeccable customer service specialist that helped me, went above and beyond to assist in calling my doctor in order to straighten out a misunderstanding on the status of my coverage with the anesthesiologist. He was prompt, worked with a sense of urgency and always made sure to get back to me asap with information. It was taken care of with no problem right away. I am very happy and satisfied with my service and this insurance. I highly recommend Oscar health insurance.

Agree with the rest here. Slick on the surface. Bad coverage for the money.
Poor billing.  Really disappointed and stuck with a $2700 bill for a 4 hour visit to the emergency room. What kind of insurance doesn't have some kind of albeit high co pay for that. And they have a high prenegotiated rate with the hospital so it's difficult to make a break. I've covered all my deductibles and I recently received a $300 bill from a doctor visit 6 months after my visit.  Totally Random. Worst insurance I've ever had.

Thanks for you comment. If Oscar has "the largest our provider network is one of the largest in NY, consisting of over 40,000 providers and 80+ hospitals," I wouldn't get a message saying that there are no doctors in the network on ZocDoc when searching for an Orthopedist. Search now and you'll get the same message. I did another search for an OB-Gyn specialist and only got a listing of 5 doctors, none of whom are in Manhattan. They are in Hackensack, NJ, Howard Beach, NY, and Holis, NY.
So your claim doesn't make sense.

Most doctors and patients use ZocDoc for the sake of efficiency. The fact that Oscar doesn't effectively use this platform is taking its customers back 7 yrs.
Oscar health has a platform but it is terrible. Sure it has google maps but you really don't need that since ZocDoc already has that integrated plus more compelling info like snapshots of the doctors bio including degrees and board certification as well as reviews.

The telemedicine feature (Doctor on Call) is not something to boast about. There are several apps like PingMD and Acne brands that also provide free telemedicine consultations and some also provide RXs.

The fact that Oscar was founded and funded by people from the tech world blows my mind because it is the least tech savvy insurance I've experienced.
Moreover, it should not have launched before building out a comprehensive network of doctors including specialists and an app. If you don't want to use ZocDoc, create something better. Most consumers in NY especially have a habit of using ZocDoc.

I wish Yelp would allow me to give this company 0 stars.

I signed up for Oscar Silver on the Obamacare website.  I was excited to have found Oscar.  They appeared to have an innovative approach to delivering health insurance.  They sent me a glossy welcome kit with membership documents and ID cards.  Everything seemed great until I took my monthly prescription (a popular and cheap generic) to CVS.  While checking out, I was stunned to learn the prescription was DECLINED.  I asked the pharmacist to try again, but still declined.  I paid out of pocket and immediately called Oscar.

They told me over the phone that some medications require doctor approval.   I asked if they require physician approval for all medications.   She told me it's only for certain drugs.  When I requested a list of medications requiring physician approval, she said no list could be provided.  I suppose they just want people to wait in line at the pharmacy to find out they're declined.

WHAT DOCTOR WOULD PRESCRIBE A DRUG WITHOUT GIVING THEIR "CONSENT"?  The mere act of prescribing is evidence of the doctor's consent.

Because of the lack of disclosure and evasive tactics, I only paid for the first month and let it expire.

DO NOT GIVE THIS COMPANY YOUR BUSINESS.

The review below I posted when I learned that I'd have to pay for all lab tests at my Oncologists follow up visits.  Since then OSCAR has indeed finalized negotiations with that hospital and reversed my charges.  And they called and explained and suggested I revisit my review -- which is a fair request.  Below I leave my previous one star review which I posted earlier today but I'd give them five stars for pulling through with a major negotiation that no other ACA insurer has pulled off for self-employed cancer survivors who get treatment at the best place in town.

    _______________________________________________________

When I switched from Blue Cross to Oscar it was for only one reason: to get coverage at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where I go for annual checkups and blood tests.  I am a healthy cured cancer survivor and pretty much have no other medical needs.  I don't even have a prescription.  I just want to go back to the genius doctors who cured me and get check ups and have the expensive tests they order covered and I am happy to pay a big premium and happy to have a big deductible.  I just need the financial security of my insurance in case I face the uncertainty of not knowing what will happen if a marker shows up and lots more procedures follow.

Blue Cross hadn't reached an agreement with MSKCC for their ACA covered plans and they were terminating the one I was on to make way for ACA.  Blue Cross was very nice in telling me I could fill out forms and ask for special continuity coverage at MSKCC.   But there was uncertainty in this path.   And OSCAR promised me I was covered so I switched.  To be clear, I had long extensive talks with Oscar reps at their Manhattan offices and the last rep told me he was a "survivor" and wouldn't give me false information.  I'd be 100% covered at MSKCC except for deductibles.

So I signed up for the Platinum Plan and then received a notice that OSCAR didn't cover blood tests or lab work outside of certain labs.  Sloan Kettering wasn't on the list.  I spoke with reps who "elevated" my concerns and was told that OSCAR was aware that MSKCC did things "unusually" in regard to blood tests and lab work. and they were working with them on this issue.  OSCAR also told me that thousands of their members had signed up with OSCAR because of the MSKCC covreage so they understood and MSKCC wouldn'r bill me while negotations went forward.

"No, they don't do things differently," I explained. "Every major medical oncology institution will only rely on its own test results before they tell you that have to undergo surgery, chemo ,radiation or give you the worse news that nothing will work."  I am pretty sure NYU, Cornell and Columbia use their own pathology and labs for tests even on healthy patients.  And I reiterated that I only signed up for OSCAR to get this coverage with this one facility for these checkups.  They said they'd keep me informed on the talks with MSKCC.

I don't think the OSCAR people understood what they were promising when they told subscribers the Magna netork they were using would cover all these costs.  But let me make the point that I was laceratingly clear when I asked these questions of OSCAR before giving them my subscription.

Well I got a bill indicating the services were not covered.  I'll appeal it but so far giving these guys a shot was a mistake.

Just to update my last review:  Oscar decided to cover my lab work this time, for which I'm extremely grateful.  I had to talk with my doctor's office to make sure that they will use the labs Oscar covers in the future so that this doesn't happen again.  Labcorp and Quest were the labs that I was told about via email; I think more are listed on their website.  If you have Oscar health insurance, make sure your doctor's office knows about this policy so you don't end up having a panic attack when you see your bill.

I am really surprised by all the negative reviews of Oscar on here.  I have had it since January, and my experience has been really good, as far as insurance companies go. I was able to find a doctor and make a visit, and everything was completely covered, no problems at all.  Every time I have talked to someone on the phone from Oscar they have been super nice and helpful.

At this point I have just ended my coverage, only because I have a new employer that is providing me with insurance.  After I called to cancel, I forgot to turn off my recurring payment, and someone from Oscar actually called me to check in and see if I wanted to cancel the payment or continue the insurance. I was really impressed by that - it seems like they are paying attention and they care about their customers.

If it seems too good to be true....it IS. Started out great, then one by one my doctors started dropping this insurance. The main reason I chose this plan is their affiliation with the North Shore LIJ hospitals....by the end of my first month of being with Oscar NSLIJ was no longer taking their plan so I had to find all new doctors. I did not want to change my OBGYN but I had no choice. I found another OBGYN that I loved, as of Friday she no longer takes Oscar....back to the drawing board. I'm excited to get out of this plan for next year.

Absolute nightmare. This company sends slick expensive marketing materials but will not cover basic life saving medications. Their website assures prospective customers that they cover asthma medications, but then once you're signed up they tell you that your doctor needs to spend hours on the phone with them proving "medical necessity" in order to get prior authorization (as if they'd be writing prescriptions for unnecessary medications!).

They don't cover Advair at all (they told us to go ahead and appeal, but in the mean time, no meds). So my doctor switched me to Symbicort (which is a major medical decision that comes with some serious potential risks - that we were forced to make entirely for insurance reasons). Now, after one month on the new meds they are refusing to cover a refill of it!!! They now say that because I also have a rescue inhaler (any one of: ProAir, Albuterol or Ventolin) that they will not also cover the daily medication (Symbicort). Now they want my doctor to appeal again.

These two medications are both for asthma, but are for completely different purposes. Everyone with asthma has been told repeatedly by their doctors how important it is to have both, and not rely on one to serve both purposes. Not having both types of medication and using each for its intended purpose CAN BE DEADLY!!! The print materials that come with the medications are full of such warnings too.
But the insurance company (it's CVSCaremark that Oscar contracts with for their prescription coverage) is telling me that those meds are "in the same class" so I must choose between them each month. Outrageous!!!

I wonder how many people will have to die before the lawsuits force some change to these policies. These people are criminals.

Beware!! I'll be looking into how fast I can switch to another company and checking that they use a different prescriptions administrator. Unfortunately, this whole preauthorization process has taken me past the window of time where I could have switched at the beginning. Ugh!

I've been an Oscar member for 2 months. I've been trying to renew a prescription for a sleeping aid that I take every night. Oscar only approved 15 pills for every 25 days. The representative told me that the doctor gave a diagnosis of depression instead of insomnia, and that's why I can only get 15 pills.
I find this very dangerous that Oscar is deciding how much medication a member should take. Whether it's depression or insomnia, if a patient has been on a medication every day for years, taking 10 pills less a month can have disasterous results.
I'm very surprised that an insurance company can have so much power over a person's medical care. This is something a doctor should be deciding, not an insurance company.
    Very scary!!!

When I called Oscar about adding an out of network provider to my in network benefits (I have a chronic illness) Oscar said that if my doctor wasn't covered by them then they were probably corrupt and they would have the government investigate said doctor. And when management called back to apologize they said they would be dropping the majority of their in network providers so they could offer better service. Needless to say I went with Health Republic. I wrote about it in more detail on my blog, but I don't think I can post links on Yelp.

Coming from someone who does billing and insurance work for a medical practice, this is a review from the other end. This insurance is one of the worst I've seen. It's suppose to be hip and cool because they offer email services and being modern. Let me tell you, it is far from making your life any easier than regular insurance plans.

They partner and outsource their authorization to a new company (with no experience) call Alicare and the nurses and doctors are not experienced at all to read any type of medical documentations. With other companies, they already know what it means and what to do because they have the skill and people who know what they're doing. Something that takes less than 3 days took them over a week to get done.

Don't even get me started on the billing portion. This is what happens when people in business thinks they can go into the medical field with no prior experience or common knowledge. Couple of my doctors are already opting out due to this insurance.

Oscar has been great to work with so far. I am diabetic, and shortly after I signed up I went to the pharmacy to get a prescription filled for an expensive adjunct diabetes drug that is covered under their pharmacy plan. Their pharmacy provider, Caremark, rejected the prior authorization that my doctor faxed because she had accidentally answered a question wrong (ahhh, bureaucracy) and after a couple of weeks of frustrating back and forth with my doctor and Caremark, I called Oscar's customer service for help - I should note that Caremark blamed Oscar for the rejection (which turned out to be one of many false things I was told by Caremark customer service) so when I called I was pretty upset.

A couple of hours after speaking to the initial Oscar rep, a supervisor called me back, and she had already called Caremark to try to find out what the story was. The next day, I was contacted by a nurse who works for Oscar, who apparently had been briefed of the situation in a meeting that afternoon. Within two days she had successfully contacted my doctor and Caremark's director of prescription authorizations, and had the rejection overridden (two days in healthcare bureaucracy time, by the way, is roughly the equivalent of fifteen minutes in real life.) I was impressed by the communication between the Oscar employees in getting this resolved.

I never leave online reviews but I wanted to be able to say publicly how good my experience was since it's a new company.

So far I have found their doctor network adequate. My gyno wasn't in network and the guy I spoke to when I signed up said if I gave them her contact info they'd try to get her to join.

    First to Review
Oscar sells itself as a technically savvy health insurance company.  Every experience I've had as a member suggests otherwise.

And their network stinks.  It's small, limited and most doctors haven't heard of Oscar.

Bill Payment:  I set up a recurring payment.  But instead of recurring every month when the bill is due, it sets the payment for the date I signed up for recurring payments.  The only way to change the date is by cancelling, and signing up for a recurring payment on the SPECIFIC DAY you want it to run.  Doesn't seem very 'technically savvy' to me, and my bill payment is registered as LATE.

    Not "cool."

As I stated, network is limited.

Customer service is not good.  I had a prescription filled, spoke to my doctor he said he sent it in.  I hear nothing from Oscar for over a week.  I finally get curious and call in - surprise!  My claim wasn't covered.  Oscar made zero attempt to contact me to let me know my prescription was rejected.  Frustrating.

I'm not impressed with Oscar.  Their initial customer service is nice, and it is refreshing to be able to easily contact representatives.  But their network is limited and I have had 0% success rate in having issues resolved through Oscar.  It seems they are going through serious growing pains.

Unfortunately I will be canceling my plan and moving to a more established insurance company.

This is my first yelp review, that's how upset I am.

I am not impressed with Oscar -- I think they need to do a much better job if they intend to retain their customers. First, although they use the Magna Care network of providers, Oscar does not in fact include the entire Magna Care network. I learned this when I spent an entire day figuring out whether a provider I'd been referred to was indeed in the network. I was told yes, by the referring clinic who checked, and when I called the doctor's office. So I got on the subway and when I arrived at the doc's office waited over an hour. First was told that I was covered. But then waited an hour while they checked to "make sure." Well, it turned out that they were not in the Oscar network. Days later I found out that although the doctor is part of the Magna Care network, they are not certified by Oscar. And yes, they are in NYC.

The following day I tried calling some doctors listed on the Oscar network and after calling 4, and reaching different doctors with a different specialties, called Oscar to report that the phone numbers listed didn't align with doctors' offices. Oscar blamed this on Magna Care. But, the woman offered to call some doctors for me and get back to me the next day. This was 3 1/2 weeks ago and I never heard from her.  I found a doctor using ZocDocs, which, by the way, has great technology and information. I am now waiting for bills to come in from another doctor visit so that I can find out--after the fact--what Oscar doesn't cover. This seems to be hidden information, in part  because they are not transparent about their network.

And, as another reviewer notes, their technology is rather basic (insufficient) given their roots in high tech.

Maybe they will improve, but Oscar should know that they started a health insurance company, not a game company and so, they should be better and meet the launch date.

Having Oscar health insurance has been an amazing experience - as someone who worked in health insurance outreach for over four years, and has worked in the health care field for almost nine years, I've been blown away by both the customer service and ease of use that Oscar offers. Signing up was ridiculously easy - I just had to make a phone call, and the representative was able to both enroll me and also handle specific  negotiations with the state regarding when my health insurance could start - all I had to do was wait for a confirmation. Since then, I've reached out to Oscar several times with questions and always gotten incredibly prompt responses, and also used the telemedicine service several times to great success. Given that I couldn't even reach my last doctor via phone or email with my healthcare concerns, and always had to end up going to expensive urgent care to get pressures issues resolved, having the telemedicine service has been a wonderful and relieving service to have at my fingertips. I can't speak to more global experiences, but as a healthy consumer in my late twenties who is both price-conscious (and wanted a lower rate than quoted by other insurance companies I looked into) and wants convenience at my fingertips, Oscar has met all my needs.

I have 3 kids and I need a decent healthcare plan for them for the most part. I signed up for Oscar because it seemed like a great new plan and platform. I have been so upset to find that no reputable pediatricians in the city take Oscar. The one doctor I could find who did take the plan was old and supremely unprofessional- I am ending up paying FULL price to see my old pediatrician. I cannot wait to get off of this plan next year.

after reading that a yearly physical is covered, I find that the lab work on blood is not covered, and was sent a bill for $1444 that they are sticking me with.  I have never had to pay so much for lab work anyway on a yearly physical, but they claim that they can't help me with negotiating that with the provider.  Though the outpatient hospital faculty doctor's lab on the premises is covered as in-network they are still not covering the blood lab work, and that indeed blood work is not covered as part of a physical.  I have never had a general physical without some lab work being done.  That free yearly physical they promise you is going to cost over $1500.
